Many thanks. I studied Varela/Maturna as part of my PhD and do actually know that Luhmann paper. Autopoesis is hard to get one’s head around, especially in terms of social systems. The notion that the imaginary might be what social autopoesis is (and/or vice versa) hadn’t occurred to me though, and is a very helpful contention for what I’m currently writing.
