I think you are right that there is an implicit acceptance of liberalism in many of these models. For my part I am not so much ‘soft’ on liberalism — just incorporating it into the broader imaginary challenge. I find it hard to use words like ‘liberalism’ with any sense of clarity for obvious reasons. Individualism is a more precise part of the problem, but even that is a problem with so many aspects that I am not sure it’s the right target. For instance, part of growing as an individual is to realise just how deeply interconnected and dependent you are. And part of the problem is that individualism is currently expressed through consumption. I guess we are looking for something more like individuality (I remember a Mill/Tocqueville essay from my youth…) in which part of becoming a fuller version of yourself is to learn from, create for and serve those around you, all for some kind of shared greater good.
